For Immediate Release TREVOSE, PA and ELKO, NV (May 14, 2008) – GE Water & Process Technologies honored Newmont Mining Corporation with a 2008 ecomagination Leadership Award for reducing its annual water footprint by over 75 million gallons. GE’s DusTreat Program helped Newmont substantially reduce its annual direct operating costs by eliminating nearly 90% of the water applied to control dust on haul roads. Similarly, the program helped reduce potential runoff to the nearby Rodeo Creek, improve safety and visibility on the mine's haul roads and decrease the total amount of "fugitive dust" (dust created from mining operations) at the mine. The collaborative effort also led to a reduction in the number of times trucks needed to apply water to the dry roads -- decreasing it from 18 times per day to just twice a week. “We are committed to using solutions that help us achieve our long-term environmental and business goals,” said David Sirotek, general foreman of mine operations for Newmont’s Carlin Nevada Operations. “GE’s engineered dust control program allowed us to focus on our core business – mining.” GE dust control solutions provide mines around the world with innovative, long-lasting dust suppression alternatives that are superior when compared against traditional methods. The programs can be quickly adopted by mineral, metal, coal and gravel mines to help reduce road dust, water use and increase visibility and safety at mines. “Our expertise and global capabilities are helping mines around the world to decrease their water footprint while increasing site safety,” said Jeff Garwood, president and CEO, GE Water & Process Technologies. “Together, Newmont’s vision and GE’s innovative solutions achieved positive business, environmental and community results.” In honor of Newmont Mining Corporation’s significant environmental and business results, GE awarded Newmont with a 2008 ecomagination Leadership Award. GE’s ecomagination commitment is both a business strategy for growth at GE, and a promise to contribute positively to the environment in the process. GE DusTreat is part of GE’s broad portfolio of water-savings solutions for the mining industry. Today, GE’s mining portfolio includes: dust control solutions, material flow aids, process scaling and corrosion prevention, solid/liquid separations, cooling and boiler water treatments and water and power needs for remote mining operations.
